Recently, a client reached out to say she had google searched ‘pregnancy portraits’ to get inspired for our session, and was not only uninspired, but hadn’t resonated with a single image. So, I searched. and searched, and realized something . . . although women and pregnancy are both incredibly complicated and nuanced, these photos all look the same!
I do like fields, and dresses, and hands gently circling bellies, but when, and how did this become the entire visual story of pregnancy?
It is a powerful thing to feel seen. It seems a disservice that perhaps the only pregnant women who are felling seen are those that identify as feminine, pleasing, happy. . . And then I realized, of course, these are the very same qualities we expect of mothers! Suddenly, I understood. And now, I would like to do something about it.
If you are pregnant and would like to take part please get in touch! ( elizabellphoto@gmail.com )
I’d like to help you to feel seen. Whether that looks like this. . .
or this. . .
Or maybe even . . .
Or something else entirely!
What does pregnancy feel like for you? I genuinely would love to know.
Options for participation:
PAID: We approach it as a more traditional session with some added time for bonus experimental work. I am focused on making a full gallery of images specifically for you.
UNPAID: My focus is making artful images for the project at large. I would be delighted to send some your way.
