Last September, I had the honor of photographing an incredible group of women. Many of them were survivors of FGM.
They came together to tell their stories. Because sometimes, telling your story is the bravest thing you can do. They came together to weave a web of support. Because sometimes, support is the greatest gift you can give.
Honestly, I expected they might be fairly uneasy and closed off in front of my camera. Boy, was I wrong. They showed right up. They were brilliant. I was humbled.
Believing that, “No matter what roots we were born from or what our story has been, we all have the ability to heal,” Threads for Wellbeing “was born out of our desire to restore and nurture the well-being of refugee and immigrant women and girls. Since 2009, we’ve hosted women’s circles and wellness retreats for more than 1100 refugee and immigrant survivors of GBV (gender-based violence). ”
